This workshop will be based out of the charming little seaside town of Manzanita, Oregon. We will shoot sunrise and sunset over the ocean each day with lively, informative lectures in between. We will focus on using shutter speed to create stunning long exposure images since the rolling ocean is an ever present part of this workshop. In addition, we will talk about composition, working with natural light, and useful photographic filters.

Join us as we explore this gorgeous coastline with our cameras! Mossy forests, spring flowers, and changing tides await us.

I cannot tell you how much I learned at the Oregon workshop. I have always enjoyed your teaching style, sense of humor and your willingness to share your expertise. Your composition tips gave me much better insight and helped me look at more details as I was setting up. Simply cannot thank you enough for this opportunity.

WORKSHOP DETAILS:

  • Maximum number of participants is 6 with two instructors. By keeping our group size small, we can offer substantially more one-on-one time per student.

A small group size also gives us greater flexibility to adapt our schedule as needed for the weather. And of course, in the era of Covid, traveling with a small group is safer and easier for everyone.

This workshop includes both field and classroom instruction and is open to photographers of all experience levels.

  • The cost of the workshop is: $1,825 per person.

Workshop tuition does not include lodging, transportation, or meals.

A deposit is required to register and reserve your space in the workshop. The remaining balance is due 30 days prior to the start of this workshop.

Please click here for our full cancellation and refund policy.

Trip insurance is highly recommended to cover any unexpected circumstances.

  • The workshop begins at 9:00am on May 22nd in the town of Manzanita, Oregon. We will begin with a classroom session and then go out photographing that afternoon. Our workshop will end with a sunset field shoot on May 25th.

We will spend our time together, weather permitting, with early morning and evening field shoots each day. In between photographing, we will have informative discussions on light, composition, camera settings, and basic Adobe Lightroom image processing techniques. We’ll plan our meal times and lectures so that we can be out shooting during the best times of the day for light.

Although this is not a strenuous workshop, participants should be in good physical condition and able to negotiate stairs, cross sandy beaches, and walk safely on rocky or uneven terrain.

Most of our shooting locations are easily accessible roadside locations or short walks on well maintained paths. On the coast, we will encounter some rocky ground and sandy beaches.

  • You are responsible for your own transportation to and from Manzanita. During the workshop, we encourage carpooling. You are welcome to ride to field shoots in our minivan or follow us in your own vehicle if you prefer.

Participants should plan on arriving in Manzanita by 8:30am on May 22nd (our workshop begins at 9:00am).

    Nearest Airport:
Portland International Airport (PDX) is a 2 hour drive from Manzanita. Car rentals are available at the airport.

  • Participants are responsible for booking their own lodging in the town of Manzanita. This location allows us to maximize our time along the coast while also giving us a comfortable and convenient place to call home.

There are lots of hotels and vacation rental properties available in Manzanita. Suggested hotels include:

    The Inn At Manzanita
    Ocean Inn
    Coast Cabins

  • We’ll build in time throughout the day for meal breaks.

There are many restaurants in the Manzanita & Cannon Beach area. Here are some of our favorites:

    Wanda’s Cafe + Bakery (Nehalem)
    Big Wave Cafe (Manzanita)
    Yolk (Manzanita)

  • We have rented a private house in Manzanita which has a large living room that we will use for our group meeting space.

Phone & Internet: There will be wi-fi internet available in our classroom and your cell phone should work in Manzanita. Cell reception will be limited, or non-existent, though at many of our field shoot locations.

  • There are some workshop locations that are better suited for the non-photographer than others. Manzanita is a delightful little town with cute shops, good restaurants, and miles of beautiful beachfront for your non-photographing companions to explore on their own. This is a place where those who are not participating in our workshop will find plenty of things to do while we are out on our field shoots.

Although we believe that your non-photographing companion can have a good time on their own in Manzanita, our top-priority is on getting you out to the most photogenic locations all day.

  • You will come away from this workshop with stronger landscape photography skills. Here are just a few of the topics that will be covered:

    • How to photograph beautiful sunrise and sunset images over the ocean.

    • How to blur waves and moving water using long exposures, slow shutter speeds, and neutral density filters.

    • Dealing with challenging light and tricky exposure situations.

    • Getting sharp images with the most detail possible.

    • Composing for maximum visual impact.

    • Adobe Lightroom image processing demonstrations.

    • Clothing Layers: synthetic hiking pants, waterproof jacket & pants, fleece, insulated vest or jacket, hat, & gloves

Note: Dressing in layers is always a good idea to be prepared for all possible weather. It is best to avoid cotton in favor of wool or synthetic fabrics that will dry faster and keep you warmer if they get wet. It’s always better to bring too many warm clothes, rather than not enough. May is a month that can bring everything from warm sun to cold rain along the coast.

  • • DSLR or mirrorless camera with extra batteries & memory cards

    • Lenses: We strongly recommend bringing a high-quality wide angle lens in the 16-35mm range and a mid-range telephoto such as a 24-105mm. If you own additional lenses then please feel free to bring anything that you would like to use.

Click here to see our in-depth equipment list.

  • Covid-19 vaccination:
Unless you have a medical reason, Covid-19 vaccination is required to attend our workshops. Glacier Photo Guides instructors are fully vaccinated. If you are medically unable to be vaccinated, a negative Covid test that is done not more than 72 hours from the start of the workshop is required.

Please do not attend the workshop if you are experiencing symptoms of Covid-19, cold, or flu.
